Other Services

Enhance your book's image and marketability with the following options.

Cataloging in Publication Data – $150

Cataloging in Publication is a specialized language used by libraries to correctly and consistently catalog and shelve new books. (Look at the lower half of the copyright page of almost any book on your bookshelf and you'll find CIP data) It adds to your book's professional look and feel.

Note that you can't make this block up yourself. The Library of Congress has created specific language and formatting requirements for this data.

Ingram Advance Magazine – $75

Advance, the flagship trade publication of the Ingram Book Group, the nation’s largest book distributor, is sent monthly to thousands of booksellers and libraries all over the world. We'll include a b&w image of your cover, retail pricing info, and a short description of your book. Titles may only be included in Advance when they are first released, so this service must be ordered prior to publication. It is not available after your book has gone to press.

Copyright Registration – $100 Note: Your book will be legally copyrighted the moment it's published, without purchasing this service. The copyright is secured under international law with the inclusion of your name and the © symbol on the copyright page. This is included in every WingSpan Press publishing package.

But many authors go a step further and register their copyright with the Library of Congress. LOC registration has been viewed by the courts as prima facie evidence of ownership of intellectual property in the past. You might think of it as a form of insurance in case you ever have to defend your ownership of the material in court.

Index Formatting – $75

We'll create and format the index of your book based on the index tags you marked in your Microsoft Word document. If you need an index and are not familiar with this function in Word, talk to your WingSpan Press service representative about your options.

Footnotes – Cost: $100 + $.50/footnote

We'll format and position your book's footnote references. Note that all footnotes must be flagged using Word's footnote function.

Spring Arbor Submission – $50 Free

Spring Arbor is the nation's leading distributor of Christian books. All WingSpan Press books are included in the Ingram Catalog, but an additional listing in the Spring Arbor catalog exposes your book to hundreds of Christian bookstores around the country, increasing your exposure and targeting buyers looking for books in your niche.

Acceptance into the Spring Arbor catalog is not guaranteed. They review all submissions and accept only those which they think are suitable to a Christian audience, so we only forward those books which we think are likely to be accepted. Talk to your WingSpan Press customer service representative if you think this is the market for you.

Standard Package Add-ons

Image Acquisition – $50

If you've selected the Standard Publishing package, and have an idea for your book's cover but don't have the right image, we can help. We'll search photo sites and present you with up to three images that suit the title and theme of your book. Select one of them and we'll use it to create your book's cover.

This service is included with the Choices and Premium Publishing packages.

Custom Headers – $25

Our Standard Package layout using your book's title at the top of each left-hand page and your name at the top of each right-hand page. Some authors prefer to have the title of the chapter in place of one of those. We'll change either header to match the name of the chapter throughout the book. (The first page of each chapter usually as no header.)

Editorial Services

Make your book the best it can be by honing your manuscript first.

Line Editing – $.025 per word.

It's almost impossible to edit your own work successfully. And nothing says amateur like misspellings, bad grammar and poor word choice - no matter how well you may know your topic

If done right, editing is a time-consuming process. Many companies charge attractively low editing prices, then essentially spellcheck your document using Microsoft Word. But a proper line edit does more than find obvious spelling errors. 'There', 'they're' and 'their' are all spelled correctly, so only a careful reading of your manuscript will note that one is appropriate in a sentence and the others are not. A good line edit will check for spelling, grammar, word usage, punctuation, capitalization, even sentence fragments.

An experienced grammarian will go over your manuscript twice looking for every misplaced comma to help make your book the best it can be. Every book has errors, but minimizing them is key to leaving the reader with a good impression of your writing skills.

Development Edit – $.05 per word

The developmental provides and in-depth editorial review of your work with focus on organization and writing style.

  • Fiction: We'll look at voice, characterization, scene development and language. A historical romance 'reads' differently than a mystery or a modern social novel. Does your writing voice fit the genre of your book? Are the characters believable - even in the most far-reaching fantasy novel, people are people, and sometimes even aliens are people. Do they act the way people act? Does your book adequately present a sense of place; is it descriptive?
  • Non-fiction: Does your work hold together as a piece, or is it all over the road? Does your table of contents promise an easy-to-follow journey of learning and discovery, then does the text deliver? Is your writing too casual? Too formal? Does it have the authority that a reader can trust? We'll help you sound like the subject matter expert you are.

For both fiction and non-fiction, we'll review grammar, word choice, sentence construction and logical organization. We'll help you shed the cliches and generally improve your approach to your material.
After editing, you'll receive a markup copy of your manuscript with corrections and improvement areas noted, along with an analysis of your book's market suitability; plus, a thrity-minute conversation with our senior editor to discuss ways to improve the overall quality and approach to your book.

Good writing is marketable. Bad writing is not. We'll help you improve the writing to catch and keep a reader's attention.

Electronic & Internet Editions

Talk to a WingSpan Press representative about Kindle or other e-book editions. There are many options to consider when deciding on electronic formats and where and how you sell them.

Amazon search inside – $75

We'll create and upload an Amazon version of your book for their Search Inside program. When browsers view your book listing, they'll be able to look at a few random pages of the interior to get a sense of what the book is about and how it's written before they buy.

Google Book Search submission – $50

When people search for books on Google, your book will be available for review, with links to major retailers for purchase. Buyers will be able to look at sample pages to get an idea what your book is about. In addition, inclusion on Google increases your internet exposure.

Making Changes to Your Book

There are two points at which you may want to make changes to your book: Before it's published, and after. It's best to review carefully and make changes before your book goes to print. Doing so after your book has been published is time-consuming and expensive.

Changes Before Publication i.e. during the layout and review process:

With the Premium Package, we allocate 4 hours of production time to making changes and fixing typos and other items that you may find when you review the draft pdfs. This usually more than enough for the minor tweaks to make sure everything is perfect before going to print.
With the Choices Package, we allocate and additional 2 hours. Standard Package manuscripts should be submitted fully-edited and ready for layout.
Time required for additional changes and corrections you request are charged at $50/hour, billed in half-hour increments.

Changes After Publication i.e. during the layout and review process:

Once your book has gone to print, making changes requires that it be taken out of print and reassigned to a designer. Changes are made, then the manuscript or cover is sent back to you for review and approval. Upon aproval, the book goes through quality control again and is uploaded to the print system and its catalog listing refreshed so that the new version appears to online retailers.
This process is necessary for each edition of your book, so if you have both hardcover and softcover in print, it has to be done for both versions. The printer charges us for this, and those costs are passed on to you.

Changes to either cover or interior: $150.
Changes to both cover and interior if done at the same time: $250.
